Catherine Sim

Catherine Sim is a Sydney based artist currently living in Birchgrove. Studying Visual Art at COFA in
the 90’s she has been a practicing artist and educator ever since. Predominantly a landscape painter,
her practice involves travelling to locations and completing watercolours en plein air then using that
information to extend and complete larger oils in her Stanmore studio.
Catherine is drawn to the changing light and effect on the landscape of different weather and can
often be found painting on isolated beaches as storms roll in around her or dodging flies and ants in
the bush.
Urban landscapes and the tension between the built and the natural also intrigue her so her practice
takes her from her backdoor on the Balmain Peninsular to remote coastlines, rivers, farmed country
and bush.
Catherine has been a finalist in numerous prizes including twice in the Ravenswood Women’s Art
Prize, the Lethbridge Landscape and Stanthorpe Regional art prizes. Her celebration and connection
with the Australian landscape has led to several prestigious art residencies including the Nancy
Fairfax Artist in Resident programme at the Tweed Regional Gallery.
“Nature is painting for us day after day pictures of infinite beauty, if only we have the eyes to see
them”.
